Owatonna Business Women Monthly Meeting: The Art of Empathy, Rachel Miller with MN Department of Corrections

  • Tuesday, February 18, 2020
  • 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
  • Owatonna Country Club

Empathy is an incredibly important quality to have in many of our professions. It is an ESSENTIAL quality to have in all of our relationships. At times it can be difficult to name empathy when we feel it, but we definitely recognize when someone is not being empathetic with us. It is human to want someone to empathize with you, but it can be very difficult to turn the tables and empathize with someone else. We often feel uncomfortable and vulnerable, so we make mistakes in our responses. When we don’t know how to empathize, we run the risk of damaging that professional or personal relationship. We will spend time discussing what empathy is not, what empathy is, and practicing how to be an empathetic listener. This program will give you the opportunity to network and connect with other members on a deeper level. We hope that it strengthens participant’s connection to OBW and gives them skills to take into their professional or personal lives to be more empathetic listeners.

Rachel Miller has worked for the Department of Corrections since 2014. She trains and coaches probation officers and prison case managers in skills that help them better motivate their clients to make long-lasting behavior changes. She is a trainer in several disciplines of Evidence-Based Practices in Corrections including Case Planning, Motivational Interviewing, Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory, Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity and Integrated Conflict Management. Prior to working for the DOC, Rachel worked for 9 years in Isanti County supervising high-risk juvenile clients. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology from the University of MN Duluth and a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Cloud State University. She is on the OBW Executive Board and has been the Programming Chair for almost 2 years.
